Elizabeth Hopkins, Senior Associate

Elizabeth Hopkins brings more than 21 years of demonstrated fundraising success in a complex university/medical center setting to her consulting work with moss+ross. She specializes in annual fund and major gifts planning, faculty engagement in fundraising, building prospect portfolios, and campaign and communication strategies.

Elizabeth came to moss+ross in 2015 and has worked with UNC’s capital campaign, Kenan-Flagler, SECU Family House, Duke’s Center for Documentary Studies, the Duke School, the N.C. School of Science and Mathematics, the Emily Krzyzewski Center, and other clients.  Prior to this, she spent five years as a Senior Major Gifts Officer for Duke Medicine Development, serving as lead fundraiser and relationship manager for donors and grateful patient prospects for ten departments and divisions within the School of Medicine. She managed a portfolio of major gift prospects and successfully solicited and closed gifts totaling more than $7 million for medical research, clinical programs, fellowships and faculty support. She established relationships with department and division leadership, faculty, and clinical staff to develop and initiate a robust grateful patient philanthropy program that included a faculty engagement program focused on best practices for grateful patient fundraising.

She began her career in fundraising in 1993 as Director of the Young Alumni Program for the Duke Annual Fund. She then served UNC-Charlotte as a Major Gift Officer from 1995-96, where she identified, cultivated, and solicited major gift prospects, including corporations, foundations, and individuals. She initiated the creation of mini-campaign surrounding the University’s 50th anniversary of its founding.

In 1996, Elizabeth returned to Duke as Director of the Annual Fund at the Nicholas School of the Environment, raising over $100,000 per year from alumni and non-alumni constituents.

Elizabeth joined the Duke Major Gifts team in 1998 as a Regional Major Gift Director at the start of The Campaign for Duke, a $2.36 billion comprehensive campaign. For more than a decade, she directed the University’s primary development efforts in the western part of the United States. She solicited and closed six- and seven-figure gifts both individually and with a strategic team of University and Duke Medical Center colleagues and administrators. She managed a portfolio of 250 major gift prospects and helped raise more than $14 million, regularly staffing the president, deans and high-level faculty on development calls.

As a long-time Durham/Chapel Hill resident, Elizabeth has also been an active community volunteer and leader. In recent years she has served as President of the Junior League of Durham and Orange Counties and the Girls on the Run of the Triangle Board of Directors, and is a past member of the Caring House Board of Directors.

A North Carolina native, Elizabeth graduated from Duke in 1992. She and her husband, Tom Vasiliauskas, live in Chapel Hill and enjoy attending athletic events, traveling, running and cycling.
